Where the river meets the sea
In this unique place, people have lived for centuries, probably since the 12th century. Kalix gets its name from the river. Kalix River is a Swedish adaptation of the North Sami name Gáláseatnu – the cool big river. In Finnish, Kalix is called Kainuu, and in Meänkieli, Kainus. However, the area is traditionally Swedish-speaking, with the Kalix dialect historically spoken here.
Kalix Löjrom (Kalix bleak roe)
Kalix is scenically located where the mighty national river, originating from the Kebnekaise massif, meets the sea. In this meeting of fresh and salt water, the world’s largest brackish water archipelago is created, the condition for Kalix Löjrom, Sweden’s first food with a protected designation of origin. Just as drinking champagne in Champagne is a special experience, eating Kalix Löjrom in Kalix is unique.
Experience Kalix with all your senses
Kalix offers something for all senses. Crackling northern lights, creaking snow, lapping waves, and the Eurasian curlew. Northern lights and midnight sun, sparkling white expanses and clear blue skies and seas.
