Fishing in the river, Kalix älv

The Kalix River is one of Sweden’s four unregulated national rivers. Here, the water flows freely without dams, allowing fish to migrate up and down the wild river unhindered.

The nature along the river is extraordinary, with each rapid larger and longer than the last.

Kalix River is home to a unique strain of salmon – incredibly powerful creatures that swim upstream through the rapids as if moving through calm waters.

The river also hosts stream-dwelling pike, which are nothing like those living in still waters. These fish are exceptionally strong, and you’ll be amazed when one strikes your lure. Be ready – if your gear isn’t up to the task, the line can easily snap and the pike will swim off with your bait.

Where and how can you fish in the river?

Fishing begins at the villages of Gammelgården or Stråkanäs (each located on opposite sides of the river). In Stråkanäs, fishing is free, but in all other villages along the river you will need a fishing permit.

Some well-known fishing spots along the river include Kamlunge, Börjelsbyn, and Räktforsen.

During July and August, tourists can buy a river permit, valid for the entire stretch of the Kalix River within Kalix Municipality – from the Kalix Bridge to Räktforsen.

Where to buy fishing permits: Most permits can be purchased at www.laxfiskeportalen.se and ifiske.se. In some villages, however, permits must be bought manually.

Note: Fishing from a boat is prohibited in all villages within Kalix Municipality – only local residents are allowed to fish from boats. This restriction is primarily for safety reasons, to reduce the risk of drowning accidents.
