Sweden’s northernmost archipelago

Kalix’s beautiful and diverse archipelago consists of 792 islands, where you can experience everything from rocky islets to sandy beaches. The contrast between wonderful summer evenings with the sun above the horizon and endless icy landscapes in winter must be experienced. Here are some tips:

Malören

Malören, with its distinctive chapel and lighthouse, is located in the outermost archipelago and has been a nature reserve since 1997, covering an area of 182 hectares. The lodge on Malören is managed by the National Property Board, while the lighthouse is owned by the Swedish Maritime Administration and the church is owned by the Church of Sweden. Most cottages on the island are privately owned.

Halsön/Kallskär

Along the narrow isthmus leading to the southern tip of Halsön, Kallskär, lies a wonderful sandy beach with light, fine-grained, velvety sand. On the other side of the isthmus, the western side of the island also offers a lovely sandy beach to explore. The location creates magnificent sand dunes shaped by waves and wind.

Nordanskär

In 1886, J. August Bergman founded the northernmost bathing and spa resort on Nordanskär island. At that time, it had a church, 12 villas for visitors, a farmhand’s cottage, a bathhouse with hot and cold water, telephone service, a hotel, banquet hall, community room, tennis court, rowboats, sailboats, and more. Guests could also pay for mud baths, baths in natural springs, massages, and electricity. Visitors, including Selma Lagerlöf, arrived by steamboats that daily sailed from Haparanda or Luleå.

Törehamn

The northernmost point of the Gulf of Bothnia is marked by a yellow buoy functioning as a rounding mark, offering visitors a certificate confirming they have reached the northernmost point of the Gulf of Bothnia.

Welcome to a magnificent and unspoiled archipelago!
