Welcome to a life of leisure

In Kalix leisure is not just something we fit in around work, leisure is an integral part of our lifestyle and something we value. The forest, river and sea are all close to the town centre with its sports and recreation facilities and cultural activities, meaning that whatever your choice of leisure activity, there is bound to be something close by to suit you and your family.

Sweden’s leading outdoor municipality

We have been recognised as Sweden’s leading outdoor municipality no less than 10 times – something we are proud of, but not at all surprised by. Our setting, close to the forest, next to the river, on the coast and with the islands of the archipelago in sight means that opportunities are endless. Why not take a refreshing summer dip in the sea on your lunch break, a paddle on the river before walking the children to preschool or do some cross country skiing in the forest after dinner?

Whatever you are passionate about you are likely to find like-minded people who share your interests in one of our many clubs and associations. Whether it is arts, athletics or horse riding you will discover a welcoming group without the waiting lists that are often common in larger cities. In Kalix leisure is close and accessible for everybody.

Full speed ahead or peace and quiet? We have it all!

In Kalix there are a number of places to share leisure time with like-minded people.

Frizon our youth recreation club organises indoor and outdoor activities for young people at various locations in our municipality. The library at Kalix Community Centre also hosts activities for people of all ages. Here you will find a creative space, a children’s area, an art gallery with new exhibitions each month as well as a wide selection of books, newspapers, films and more. Also a place where people of all ages meet.

Every summer the municipality arranges a week-long free carnival aimed at families with children under seven. This unique festival with musical artists, shows, activities and a fun fair brings a festival atmosphere to the whole of Kalix.

Kalix is also home to one of Sweden’s few independent cinemas, a bowling alley, theatres, nightclubs and much more.

Trails for hiking, walking and jogging

If you want to get out into our beautiful surroundings there are trails to suit everyone. Our walking trails are excellent for a calm stroll or a shorter excursion alone or together with others. Our hiking trails are longer and in more varied terrain for those with more time or who are looking for more of a challenge. And whether you are training for a marathon or simply enjoy running, our jogging trails are ideal.

Paved trail

Close to Kalix Ski Stadium you will find an asphalt track suitable for roller skis, but also as a walking or jogging trail for the general public. For those in wheelchairs or with strollers the paved trail allows easier access to the forest and scenic areas.
