Welcome to the Eastern Districts
The Eastern Districts follow the Sangis River Valley all the way to the coast, spanning both the inland’s fertile farmlands and the coastal archipelago. Here you’ll find Björkfors District, with its lush agricultural landscapes; Sangis, which serves as a local service centre with a grocery store and restaurant along the E4; and the coastal village of Båtskärsnäs, where daily life is shaped by the sea and archipelago. In the Eastern Districts, tradition meets accessibility – it’s easy to live close to both nature and the sea without giving up service or a sense of community.
Around 1,000 residents call the Eastern Districts home.
A preschool and a school for children up to Year 6 are located in
Sangis also has a grocery store and local services.

Five Highlights in the Eastern Districts
Enjoy Nature During the Summer Season
Follow the 63-kilometre Skridfinnarleden trail as it winds through the landscape, or take a peaceful walk along one of the area’s forest paths. On the water, you can paddle in the archipelago, fish in the sea, lakes, or rivers, or cool off with a swim at Frevisören Beach.
Experience Winter Adventures
Miles of snowmobile trails weave through the landscape – leading all the way to the well-loved Björkfors Winter Café. Skiers can enjoy groomed cross-country tracks, both illuminated in the forest and stretching out over the frozen sea, while the area also offers excellent opportunities for ice fishing.
Step into Local History
Visit Björkfors Manor, built in 1832, Kvarngården with its exhibition of artefacts from the past, or one of the beautiful local churches: Sangis Church (1950), Båtskärsnäs Church (1974), or Björkfors Church, built in 1880 on the island of Nordanskär.
Join in Community Life
The Eastern Districts have an active network of clubs and associations, with sports clubs, village groups, and other local initiatives that bring people together – creating community and life both on land and at sea.
Visit Scenic Lookouts and Hidden Retreats
